The Anti-Diet Retreat is a weekend intensive designed to give you the coaching, tools, resources, and community you need to break up with diet culture and finally call a truce with your body.

And as for why…

Because none of us dreamed of growing up into adults who spend our days counting calories and being afraid to eat fruit.

Many of us dreamed about doing something to help other people and make a difference in the world. But when we’re heavy into dieting and body obsessions, it is so. much. harder. to do those things.

Because body shame is a distraction.
It keeps us in hiding. Or at the very least, playing small.

I don’t know what your dreams for your life are now, but I hope they are so much bigger than being thin and pretty. You were created for MORE.

And that’s why we created The Anti-Diet Retreat.

Our mission is to help you embrace the truth that your body is not the problem, and dieting is not the answer.

Sometimes, we need help remembering that we weren’t born hating our bodies.

We were taught as women that our worth is tied to the amount of physical perfection we can achieve… so it is totally understandable that we’ve spent so much time, energy, and money trying to be beautiful.

Thankfully, anything learned can be unlearned.

Body acceptance and detaching self-worth from weight is not easy but it is possible. And when that happens, you are freed up to live a full, vibrant, meaningful life!

Our compassionate, expert leaders will take you (and other women like you) through groups and hands-on activities based on Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size (HAES) principles. We want you to leave the retreat being able to better honor your unique body and experiences!

Over the course of the weekend, you’ll unlearn diet culture’s toxic rules about food and your body, and instead begin to learn:

  • How you came to have this messed up relationship with food and your body (spoiler: it’s not your fault)
  • How to redefine female worth in ways that line up with YOUR values
  • A basis for personal identity and self-confidence outside of your appearance
  • The power of body acceptance… or even just body neutrality
  • How to trust and respect your body, especially when it comes to food and movement
  • New ways to think about health and how to work on your health (if that’s important to you) without losing weight

Accommodations

The next Anti-Diet Retreat will be in the beautiful Virginia Beach!

This 9 bedroom, 7.5 bath Retreat Center has easy ocean access as well as a private pool. This weekend is not just about giving up dieting… it’s also about hitting “pause” so you can relax for a bit in a beautiful setting. Take in the serene ocean view as you sip coffee on the wooden deck, or enjoy the colorful sunsets over Back Bay!

You can choose from three different room options, depending on your preferences and budget. Options include a private room with a queen or king bed, a shared room with single beds, or a room with bunk beds.

With 7.5 bathrooms in the house, there is plenty of space for everyone to have time to shower and get ready.

The beautiful great room features plenty of comfortable seating for groups and relaxing, and a dining area with two large tables.

WHO ARE THE LEADERS?

Our Retreat leaders, Cherie and Lynnly, are not only professionals in the fields of body acceptance, disordered eating, and intuitive eating—we are also recovered from our own struggles with food and body shame. We are unapologetic social justice warriors fighting weight stigma and advocating for the rights of people in larger bodies. Read more about Cherie and Lynnly.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE BE?

We want to get to know you personally AND help you really connect with others who are on this anti-diet journey. We know ourselves how lonely it can feel to break up with diet culture! At The Anti-Diet Retreat, you’ll not only be in a safe, supportive space, you’ll also realize you don’t have to do this alone.

Our goal in keeping the group small is that participants will have more opportunity to get to know each other in a meaningful way. There are a limited number of participants at each Retreat, with no more than 10 people. Once all the spots are filled, registration will close until the next Anti-Diet Retreat.

Travel expenses to and from the Retreat are not included.

WHAT IS THE FOOD SITUATION?

Three meals a day on full Retreat days will be served. Please see the Retreat schedule for more information about meal times. There will also be snack bars stocked with chips, crackers, candy, chocolate and lots of other goodies! Water, sodas, coffee, hot chocolate, and iced tea will be available as well.

IS A PAYMENT PLAN AVAILABLE?

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Registration cancellations made more than 30 days prior to the event are eligible for a full refund of all monies paid, minus applicable credit card fees. Reservation cancellations less than 30 days in advance will forfeit 100% of the registration. Should your reservation need to be cancelled by us due to no fault of our own (e.g., government COVID restrictions, flood, fire, natural disaster, etc.), your registration may be refunded in full or it may be applied to the following Anti-Diet Retreat.

WHAT ARE THE COVID POLICIES?

At this time, masks are optional. We will assess the COVID situation closer to the Retreat and reserve the right to require masks. If you are exhibiting or experiencing symptoms of COVID (including but not limited to, fever, chills, cough, sore throat, and/or loss of taste or smell) within 48 hours of checking into the Retreat or during your stay, please inform us as soon as possible. We reserve the right to cancel your stay and will issue a credit to your account for any unfulfilled nights. By booking a stay with us, you understand that The Anti-Diet Retreat cannot and does not guarantee that its environment, its staff members, or its other guests are free of COVID and you waive any and all claims you may have against Food Freedom Therapy if your stay is cancelled pursuant to this paragraph or if you contract COVID.

WHAT IF I HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES?

If you have any food allergies, please let us know in advance.

IS THERE WI-FI?

Yes, there is Wi-Fi on site.

HOW DO I GET TO/FROM THE RETREAT?

The Retreat is located about 45 minutes from Norfolk International Airport (ORF). You can either Uber or rent a car from the airport to get to and from the Retreat. All Retreat activities will be at the retreat center so renting a car is not necessary, but if you wish to go off-site before or after the retreat, or during open Retreat time, you might want to rent a car.

IS THIS THERAPY?

No, The Anti-Diet Retreat is not therapy. It is coaching and support from professionals experienced in recovering from disordered eating and negative body image. If you are struggling with a clinical eating disorder or other serious mental health issue, therapy would be a better option for you. If you need help connecting to a local therapist or facility, please let us know. If you are currently in therapy and are stable, this might be a good option for you.
